Did you know that of the 80,000 tonnes of pumpkins produced in Canada, 66% are sold to consumers; often used for carving and are never eaten. Without intervention, this is an immense amount of organic waste destined for the landfill.
But you can do something about it! You don’t have to trash that pumpkin and send it to the landfill where it will contribute to the production of greenhouse gases such as methane (Produced when organic material breaks down without oxygen) or produce harmful leachates.
You can compost it instead!
And I want to make it easy and fun to do just that.
So we have a Pumpkin Smash event on November 6, 2021 here at the Backyard and Compost Corner where you can smash your own pumpkin for fun, watch a pumpkin be dropped from up high and win a coupon and a plant if you guess where the biggest piece is going to end up. Plus you can make a Christmas craft with Prim and Proper Prince Albert while you are out here.
And if you can’t make it out to our Pumpkin smash event, you can drop your pumpkin off at our Pumpkin drop off site at the John M. Cuelenaere library.
And if you want to keep Composting all year around, sign up for our Compost Pick up Services.
