COMPOST TURNING HACK
However, I realized the other day that not everyone knows about the quick and easy way to turn it using a bin similar to this. So if you are one of them, and you have been struggling with how to incorporate some air and mix everything up, your composting life is about to get easier. Start to finish this takes me less than 10 minutes to turn and mix the entire pile.
Step 1. Remove the bin off the top of the pile
Remove bin from pile
Lift the bin, simple as that, they are open at the bottom so taking it off the top is simple quick and easy.
Step 2. Take Compost off top and set aside
The stuff on the top is usually the freshest stuff that hasn't broken down yet. We'll incorporate it into the middle of the pile to ensure that it breaks down in the hottest and most active part of the pile.
Step 3. Shovel Compost back into the bin

Now fill the bin back up in it's new location. Make sure to put the stuff you removed from the top of the pile right back in the middle.
While you are turning it's a great opportunity to look at the pile and make sure it's composting properly.
- If the pile is dry and not breaking down, this is the time to add water.
- If the pile is wet and smells bad make sure you fluff it up to try to dry it out. (You may need to turn a couple more times in the next few days to get it to the right moisture level)
And that's all folks. Start to finish, including time taking pictures this took 10 minutes to complete. I remember before I did this I would be trying to scoop in side the bin and mix it up, getting frustrated and giving up on ever having good compost. This is so much faster, so much easier and does a much better job.
Let me know in the Comments how you turn your compost pile.
